11 West 53 Street New York, NY 10019.
The Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawings Collection, acquired by the Museum in 2005, is an extraordinary collection of over 2,500 contemporary works on paper. Through a selection of more than three hundred works, this first comprehensive presentation of the gift surveys the various methods and materials within the styles of gestural and geometric abstraction, representation and figuration, and systems-based and conceptual drawings. The exhibition brings together historical works by Lee Bontecou and Joseph Beuys; Minimalist and Conceptual works by Donald Judd and Hanne Darboven; detailed narrative drawings by Elizabeth Peyton and John Currin; collages by Amelie von Wulffen, Mona Hatoum, Lucy McKenzie and Paulina Olowska; and large-scale installations by Nate Lowman and Ján Mancuska, to name just a few. In its exploration of diverse artistic tendencies at the turn of the twenty-first century, this exhibition proudly celebrates the panoramic state of drawing today. Until 4th January 2010.
Extreme Mammals.
American Museum of Natural History Telephone (212) 313-7278
79th St. at Central Park West, New York.
With Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time, the American Museum of Natural History explores the surprising and often extraordinary world of extinct and living mammals. Featuring spectacular fossils and other specimens from the Museum`s collections, vivid reconstructions, and live animals, the exhibition examines the ancestry and evolution of numerous species, ranging from huge to tiny, from speedy to sloth-like, and displays animals with oversized claws, fangs, snouts, and horns. Through the use of dynamic media displays, animated computer interactives, hands-on activities, touchable fossils, casts, taxidermy specimens, and a colony of live sugar gliders (extreme marsupials from Australia) the exhibition will highlight distinctive mammalian qualities and illuminate the shared ancestry that unites these diverse creatures.
Roxy Paine on the Roof: Maelstrom
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Telephone 212-535-7710
1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, New York, New York 10028-0198
American artist Roxy Paine (b. 1966) has created a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture, especially for the Museum?s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. Giving viewers the sense of being immersed in the midst of a cataclysmic force of nature, Maelstrom (2009) is Paine`s largest and most ambitious work to date. The latest in a diverse body of work, this sculpture is one of the artist`s Dendroids based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia. Set against Central Park and its architectural backdrop, the installation explores the interplay between the natural world and the built environment amid nature`s inherently chaotic processes. Until 29th November 2009.
